Today was my happiest day at school. I had not the slightest thought that it would become so dear to my heart. Today’s Election Day turned out to be truly auspicious for me.
I went to school with my bag full of coursebooks, unaware that there would be no classes since the election was scheduled to last the entire day. As soon as I stepped into the school, my friends, who were candidates for the presidency of various clubs that were to be formed after the election, rushed toward me, scribbled their candidacy numbers on my palm, and asked me to vote for them. I was in awe of what had just happened. It reminded me of how I used to doodle on my palm and outline the veins of my hand when I was younger. Only after this did my friends inform me that there would be no classes today. Who doesn’t love it when classes are canceled? I was overjoyed.
I went to my classroom, kept my bag there, and returned to the ground where the elections were taking place. The atmosphere was chaotic. Some students were standing in lines to cast their votes, while candidates were busy informing others about their numbers and requesting their votes. I joined a few candidates, helped advertise, and rallied with them. By now, both my palms were covered with numbers of candidates to vote for. Everyone seemed to be in a rush—no one stood still.
After a while, amidst this chaotic rush of emotions, I finally cast my votes for the candidates I supported.
At around 1 o’clock, I believe, all the votes had been cast, and the counting began soon after. The Election Commissioners, Mr. Khumlal Sharma, Ms. Purnima Acharya, and Ms. Arpana Acharya, collected the ballot boxes and began reading out the votes through a speaker, ensuring fairness and transparency. The ECs handled the vote counting cleverly, often making the spectators laugh. They built anticipation with every announcement, and throughout the process, the crowd remained cheerful. Students cheered loudly whenever their friends received votes.
The day was cold and foggy, with no sign of the sun, yet the atmosphere at the vote-counting area was bright, warm, and filled with high spirits. Watching all this from the third floor of our school building, I couldn’t resist going downstairs to immerse myself in the excitement. I joined my friends, sitting among them, listening, cheering, and celebrating. I hadn’t been in the best mood earlier, but as I soaked in the happiness, smiles, and laughter around me, I felt rejuvenated. A school day had never felt as entertaining and joyful as this one.
The votes were still being counted when we were given the option to return home. My friends urged me to leave with them, and I couldn’t refuse. After reaching my room, I reflected on the day’s events and felt an overwhelming sense of peace, ease, and joy. The laughter, energy, and positivity of the day had lifted my spirits, making it the best day of my school life.
This election was not just an ordinary school activity but a festival in itself. All the students participated with enthusiasm, and my palms being covered with candidate numbers felt like a tradition of this unique celebration. Throughout the day, emotions fluctuated like a rollercoaster, and I loved every moment of it. I have attended a few Jatras, and today felt like another Jatra—one that I enjoyed even more than the others. I celebrated it as a true festival, and I know I will cherish this memory for a long time.
I am immensely grateful to the school administration for organizing this election and making the day so special. It was a perfect example of democratic practice. I congratulate all the elected candidates and wish them success in their tenure as Presidents of their respective clubs.
Today was a good day. Today was a winning day.
